How Does Lemborexant Differ from Traditional Sleeping Aids Like Xanax and Stilnox?
Dayvigo (Lemborexant), Stilnox (Zolpidem), and Xanax (Alprazolam) are all medications used to treat sleep disorders, but they belong to different classes and have different mechanisms of action, which may influence their side effects and potential for dependence.
- Dayvigo® (Lemborexant): Promotes sleep by helping you both fall asleep and stay asleep, with a lower risk of dependency compared to traditional sleep aids.
- Stilnox® (Zolpidem): Effective for initiating sleep, but carries a risk of dependency and misuse. Recommended for short-term use only.
- Xanax® (Alprazolam): Primarily prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders, but sometimes used for sleep problems. It has a higher risk of dependency than Stilno
Dosage and Indications
For insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep:
- Starting dose: 5 mg once daily, taken immediately before bedtime, with at least 7 hours available before planned awakening.
- Adjustment: May increase to 10 mg once daily, depending on clinical response and tolerability.
- Maximum dose: 10 mg once daily.
- Important: Always use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
- Food: Can be taken with or without food, but avoid taking it with or soon after a heavy meal as it may delay sleep onset.
- Precaution: Take exactly as prescribed. Do not drive or operate machinery the next day if you feel drowsy.
